Cultivate body mind balance while enjoying a healthy, productive and joy-filled summer with the YIMS 7 Tips for a Healthy Summer.
#1. Hydrate
The sun and heat of summer quickly deplete the body’s water reserves. Make a point of choosing water as your beverage of choice. Always pack a bottle of water for any outing and pass on the super sized sodas, iced mocha drinks, Slurpees, etc. You’ll have more energy and feel great.
#2. Wear Sunscreen![sunscreen]()
At the beach or in the back yard, sunscreen is a must. Use one with an 30 SPF at least – the higher the better – and re-apply regularly. Protect yourself further with a T-shirt, brimmed hat and sun glasses. Your skin and eyes thank you!
#3. Enjoy the Outdoors
Spending time outside is great for both your physical and mental health. Enjoy the good weather and longer days by mindfully immersing yourself in the natural world: enjoy the grass beneath your feet, plant a garden, take a walk, practice yoga in the park, swim, bike, hike, fly a kite, build sandcastles, go camping.
#4. Connect with Family and Friends![Waterpark-fountainpose]()
Build quality relationships by having fun together. Invite a friend to come along to the waterpark, roast s’mores over a campfire, host a BBQ, swap favorite beach reads. For more idea see 54 Fun Family Activities for Summer Yoga Style.
#5. Snack on Fruits and Veggies
Enjoy the bounty of the earth by eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. They are easy to take along on picnics and outings and are packed with nutrition your mind and body will love. Visit a local U-pick farm or Farmer’s Market for the best flavor and home-grown goodness.
#6. Discover Something New
Summer is an ideal time to cultivate a hobby, take a class or develop your talents, interests and abilities. Take the kids to yoga summer camp, hone your skills by enrolling in a workshop or class you’ve been wanting to take or travel to that little known destination and spend the day exploring. Always be ready and willing to learn something new.
#7. Rest and Relax
With all the activities of summer it’s important to take time to relax and find balance. Whenever possible rest in savasana in the shade to soothe the nervous system and replenish your energy reserves. Also be sure to keep the kids (and yourself) to a restful bedtime routine to avoid meltdowns and crankiness.
